Petition for National Day of Mourning

Below is a petition that was created by a group of Moms asking the federal government to declare a national day of mourning for all the Canadians who have been lost to the toxic drug poisoning epidemic.

They recognize that a National Day of Mourning will not stop the deaths from the toxic drug supply. However, it will remind Canadians every year of the thousands of lives lost and it will raise the question, “what is the government doing to stop this from happening”? It will open the conversation and allow critical examination of the existing government policies and create an opportunity for MSTH leaders and members, as well as other like minded organizations, to present policy alternatives that save lives.

Our loved ones deserve to be remembered every year - the government needs to recognize one more life is one too many!

This is a paper petition. Paper petitions receive greater recognition by the Canadian House of Commons than e-petitions and have no expiry date.

How to circulate the petition:

1. Download the petition.

2. Collect a minimum of twenty-five signatures. The first page of the petition the whereas part must accompany additional signature pages sent in.

3. Send it to your MP or any other MP. By law, your MP must register and present any paper petition that has 25 signatures to the house of commons.

4. Send the petition to all your friends, neighbours and colleagues, have them sign it and send the page back to you. Scanned signatures don’t count. You can add the pages with their signatures to your petition and mail it in.

5. You can also ask your friends, neighbours and colleagues to download it and collect their own signatures and send it in. Just remind them to start with the first “where as” page and send it along with accompanying signature pages.

6. It is free to send a letter to your MP. To show you have more skin in the game, add a stamp if you can.

7. Send the petition to any like minded organization that you may know of who would support a National Day of Mourning.

8. When you have sent in your petition email, Jan Mahoney at nawg@momstoptheharm.com and give the name of the MP you sent it to and the date.

You can find your MP and their contact information here:

https://www.ourcommons.ca/Members

Enter their name in the search and they will come up or search by province.

If you have any questions please contact Jan by email.

In love and solidarity,

Jan Mahoney, Secretary of the MSTH National Advocacy Working Group
