A private members bill to decriminalize the personal possession of substances Bill C-216 is currently being debated in the house of commons and we need your help to get it to the next stage.

To make it easy for all we are holding our first ever online Zap Event, a direct action strategy that originated in the early gay rights movement. We gather via Zoom and first learn about the bill and the importance of decriminalization. We will share resources, such as letter templates, petitions and graphics and answer any questions you may have. In part two of the event, we will all engage in direct action by calling our MPs (leave a message), Tweeting at them, writing emails, and collecting signatures for petitions. All in one hour.

We need to take urgent action.

The vote to move the bill to the committee stage is on June 1st, 2022.

Getting the bill to committee means it can be reviewed and experts are consulted, most importantly people who use drugs, but also policy, health and legal experts.

The can not be partisan and everyone should be open to giving this bill a chance to be reviewed. This is our ask of all MPs, Ministers and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Bill C-216 proposes

  1. The reform of Canadian drug policies to decriminalize simple possession of drugs listed in the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act;

  2. The expungement of conviction records for simple possession of controlled substances.

  3. A health-based National Strategy that includes access to a regulated safer supply of drugs, the expansion of trauma-informed treatment services, recovery and harm reduction services, and public education and awareness campaigns throughout Canada

Can’t make it to Zap? Don’t worry. Use the resources below to support Bill C-216.
