Memorial Trees Holiday Trees Remind of the Loved Ones Lost

December 18, 2019 by Petra Schulz

An initiative started by Darlana Treloar and other MSTH members in Powell River has spread to other BC communities, including Penticton and Kamloops.  Christmas or seasonal trees are decorated with ornaments containing photos of our loved ones lost from substance use harms. It is a public display showing who we  are mourning: real people, who were loved and who are missed.

Last year was the first year for the tree in Powell River and it had a big impact among family and friends, both MSTH members and Community members . This year again the tree is on display in the Powell River mall.

The Kamloops team, lead my MSTH local and regional leaders Sherry Robinson and Sandra Tully was called the “Silent NIght Memorial Tree”, highlighting the fact that the absence of our loved ones leaves a void, at holiday tables and in our hearts. It is on Display at the North Kamloops Library until December 31.

The Penticton Tree is on display at the Penticton Hospital and this initiative was driven by Jill McCullum and local MSTH members in the South Okanagan. The tree has caught the attention not only of the public, but also hospital staff. One physician, who has seen many an overdose victim in his emergency room was so moved that he made a significant donation to help the work of MSTH.

It might be too late to start a project this year, but if you want to plan a memorial tree in your community next year Darlana, Sherry and Jill are happy to tell you how.
