Alexander McClelland

Alex McClelland is an Associate Professor at Carleton University in the Institute of Criminology. He works on issues of criminalization and public health, and he conducts research grounded in community-based perspectives. He is the author of the book Criminalized Lives: HIV and Legal Violence, published in 2024 from Rutgers University Press. Along with being a researcher, Alex is a longtime HIV activist. Alex is a founding member and former chair of the Canadian Coalition to Reform HIV Criminalization. In this role, he has been working closely with communities, the media, and with various government representatives. In 2022, Alex lost his uncle - with whom he was very close - to opioid toxicity, and he has lost friends and colleagues to the ongoing drug policy crisis.
