Wendy Gore-Hickman, Saskatoon, SK

I am a person in long term recovery, which for me, means that I have not had to use alcohol or drugs for more than 5 years. I have a 23 year old son who is also in recovery from opiate addiction. After a near death overdose, as well as a three month hospitalisation for subacute bacterial endocarditis (infection of the heart valves from IV drug use), my son Sean went to Edgewood in Nanaimo. He is now almost 3 years clean and sober. I know that I am truly blessed, and one of the lucky Moms.

I had a wonderful career as an anesthesiologist. I retired early, a year ago, so that I could continue my work in recovery advocacy, and trying to make improvements to addiction services and harm reduction in Saskatchewan on a full time basis. I work with individuals and families, trying to help them and their loved ones find a path to recovery.

Wendy is in recovery and mother of a son in recovery.
