Jill Martens, Penticton, BC
Jill Martens lost her oldest child, Daniel, on April 30, 2016, who was one week shy of 24. She believes he had been drug free for nearly 17 months, when he overdosed on some morphine that was laced with fentanyl. On May 3rd, as per his wishes, Daniel donated his lungs, liver and kidneys for organ transplant and then was taken off of life support. Daniel was a kind, gentle soul, who loved the outdoors and nature, snowboarding, guns and target practice, animals, and motorized vehicles. He was always there for the less fortunate in life, it was one of these friends whose dad gave Daniel Percocet that lead to his opioid addiction. Daniel had every reason to want to live; a loving girlfriend, full-time employment, a supportive loving family, and financial help for schooling. He had made plans to have lunch with his girlfriend 45 minutes prior to his death. At Daniel’s funeral, Jill made the pledge to Daniel, that she would do whatever she could to help others struggling with substance use. This is Jill’s way of honoring Daniel, and hopefully preventing other families from experiencing the ultimate loss in life; the loss of a child.
