Be prepared to react to an overdose

  • If you suspect an overdose call 911
  • Say the person is not breathing or is unresponsive to stimulus
  • You do not need to mention “overdose” to the 911 operator
  • Perform rescue breathing as soon as possible
  • If you have Naloxone, use it and be prepared to give a second dose
  • There are no bad effects to Naloxone other than reversing the effect of the opioid
  • After administering Naloxone be prepared for signs of withdrawal
  • Tell the person what happened and do not let them take another dose
  • Be sure that they get immediate medical help as the effect of Naloxone my wear off.
  • Stay with the person or designate someone to stay with them until help arrives
